What to Expect as a New Patient

1. Schedule an Appointment

In order to be seen, we ask that all patients first have an appointment on our schedule. Please contact the office at 402-421-3240 between the hours of 8:15 and 4:00 to do this. Always schedule your appointment using the reception line unless you need to be seen today. In this case, use your nurse’s line instead. If you are requesting to become a patient at the clinic, then please contact the office at 402-421-3240.

We also ask that our new patients bring their completed forms, photo ID, insurance card(s), and prescription bottles to their first appointment. This is the only way we can document the correct medication, dosage, and frequency.

2. Bring Your Documents

If you are already an established patient, then we ask that you bring your current insurance card(s) to each appointment. We may ask to see your card(s) to ensure we have the correct information on file. If you carry Medicare coverage, then remember to bring your new Medicare card that no longer has your Social Security number on it.

If you have lab orders from another provider that you would like drawn here, then please give us a call ahead of time. We do not process all labs, and sometimes it is better to go to a full lab to have the work done.

3. Arrive Early

We recommend activating your patient portal right away for easy access to your nurse between appointments. Portal messages go straight to their inbox, and this allows them to respond much more quickly. Remember, we do not interrupt patient care for phone calls unless it is an emergency (sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, etc.). If you need help setting up your portal, then please give Reception a call.

Finally, we ask that all patients arrive early for their appointments. This gives us plenty of time to prepare you for the doctor. New patients should arrive 30 minutes early, and established patients should arrive about 15 minutes early.

Financial Plans & Insurance

If you don’t have insurance, we offer a 30% discount for non-insurance members. Download our 2023 Self Pay Fee Schedule below. If you still have questions call us at (402) 421-3240.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. Learn more about your Right to Receive a Good Faith Estimate of Expected Charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a doctor of internal medicine?

Physicians who practice internal medicine are often called “internists,” and our internists specialize in treating adults. They provide care for acute problems such as colds and injuries, follow up on complex medical conditions and routine examinations, and offer expert guidance for disease prevention.

  • What are the instructions for fasting?

Nothing to eat or drink EXCEPT water, tea, or black coffee (no cream or sugar).

    This means you CANNOT have:

    • Diet soda or soda,
    • Juice of any kind,
    • Candy, mints or gum, or
    • Vitamins of any kind.

However, medications should be taken as usual unless they are taken with food or milk, or your doctor says otherwise.

  • If I am hospitalized, will my doctor take care of me?

Some of our physicians continue to follow their patients if hospitalization is required, but others do not. If you are hospitalized and your physician does not round at the hospital, then you will be cared for by the hospitalist, a physician who only works inside the hospital.

  • Do I need to see a gynecologist in addition to an internist?

Like gynecologists, internists can provide routine pap smears and pelvic exams. However, some patients prefer to continue seeing their gynecologist for exams while their internist manages their other concerns. You are welcome to choose whichever path makes you the most comfortable.

  • How long do I have to fast?

If testing for lipids or cholesterol, then fast for 12 hours*

If testing for blood sugar, then fast for 8-12 hours*

*NOTE: Fasting longer than 14 hours can cause an error in your lipid (cholesterol, triglycerides) results.

For drug levels (e.g., Digoxin, Dilantin, Tegretol, Theophylline, Quinidine, Norpace), it is recommended that these levels be drawn prior to the next dose for therapeutic monitoring.

  • How do I receive results?

In most cases, lab results can be found in the Patient Portal. Sometimes the physician or their nurse will call you about your results. If you prefer, a paper copy can also be mailed to you upon request. Please contact our office if you are having problems getting your results or if you have not heard from your provider or nurse within 5-7 days. If you need help, then please call the office and speak to your nurse.

  • What are reference labs?

We do some tests where the specimen is taken here and sent out to a “Reference Lab” for processing. If you have questions about this, then please check with your laboratory technician. They can explain if any of your tests require us to send the specimen out for analysis. If we do send it out, then you will receive a statement or bill from them, as well.

  • How do you handle outside lab orders?

We ask that you notify your nurse whenever you have outside lab orders so she can get them preapproved with your provider and ensure it is something we can do here in the office. There are times when another provider asks that lab work be drawn, but it is something we do not perform here in the office. In these cases, it would be better for you to go directly to the reference lab rather than have them drawn here.

  • What does your lab test/how can I get tested at LIMA?

The LIMA lab allows patients to have access right in our clinic to the following testing:  chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunology, flu, covid, strep and respiratory panel.
